About Las Vegas

Las Vegas is the largest city in Nevada by population and serves as the seat of Clark County; the 2020 census counted 641,903 residents. It lies in a Mojave Desert basin, surrounded by mountain ranges. Land beside the Union Pacific Railroad tracks, 45 ha (110 acres) in all, was auctioned in 1905 in what became the downtown area, and the city was incorporated in 1911. Resort venues cluster downtown and along the Strip, which is not part of the city itself but lies in two unincorporated towns, Paradise and Winchester.

Nevada legalized casino gambling in 1931, the same year construction began on the tunnels of nearby Hoover Dam. After World War II, Las Vegas became tied to lavishly decorated hotels, casinos, and big-name entertainment. The Moulin Rouge Hotel opened in 1955 as the city's first casino-hotel to be racially integrated. The Fremont Street Experience opened downtown in 1995, a canopied five-block area with 12.5 million LED lights. Downtown revitalization in 2012, called "The Year of Downtown," brought projects valued at hundreds of millions of dollars, among them the Mob Museum, the Neon Museum, and a new City Hall complex.
