About San Domenico Maggiore
San Domenico Maggiore is a Roman Catholic church and monastery in Gothic style, founded by Dominican friars, in Naples' historic center. It faces a square of the same name. The church absorbs an earlier, smaller church called San Michele Arcangelo a Morfisa, dating to the 10th century. Charles II of Naples started the rebuilding that produced the church's Gothic form, carried out from 1283 to 1324.
The church has changed over the centuries. In 1670 some of the decoration was recast in Baroque style, yet the 19th century brought a restoration to the original Gothic design. The adjoining monastery was the first home of the University of Naples. Thomas Aquinas, who had belonged to the Dominican community there, came back to teach theology in 1272, and the philosopher Giordano Bruno lived there for a time.
An obelisk stands at the center of the square. It is a plague column, one of three in Naples, with a statue of Saint Dominic on top. Work began after the plague of 1656 on a design by Cosimo Fanzago and ended in 1737 under Charles III. Inside, the most notable artistic feature is the set of Pietro Cavallini frescoes found in the Brancaccio Chapel, dated 1309, and the sacristy holds 45 tombs belonging to the royal Aragonese family.
About this model
San Domenico Maggiore is one of more than 5,500 landmark models in Mini Skyline. They are made with AI, and each one is checked from four sides in its real surroundings before release. Everything around it is built from OpenStreetMap and Overture map data. Rights in the building itself, its name and any brands on it are not granted by Mini Skyline; clear them separately before you sell prints. If you would rather print the shape from map data, turn off Landmark models in the Buildings settings.
