About Sant'Agostino, Rome
Sant'Agostino is the common name of the basilica in Rome's Campus Martius dedicated to Saint Augustine of Hippo. The Order of Saint Augustine has its motherhouse there. The present church was completed in 1483. The building is notable for Renaissance architecture and for artworks by Caravaggio, Raphael and Guercino. Augustine's mother Monica is buried in the church.
Construction of the current church began in 1479. Pope Sixtus IV commissioned it, the architect Baccio Pontelli designed it, and Cardinal Guillaume d'Estouteville funded it; work finished in 1483. Giacomo di Pietrasanta built the facade using travertine taken from the ruins of the Colosseum. Luigi Vanvitelli finished the first restoration in 1763, and the most recent took place in 1998–2000.
Pope John Paul II gave the church the rank of minor basilica on October 29, 1999. Caravaggio's Madonna of Loreto, painted in 1606, hangs in the first chapel to the left, and Raphael's fresco of the Prophet Isaiah, from 1512, is on the left nave's third pilaster. Saint Monica's tomb was moved here from Santa Aurea in Ostia Antica on April 11, 1424.
