About Santa Maria del Carmine, Naples
Santa Maria del Carmine is a church at one end of Piazza Mercato in Naples, Italy; its other name is Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The church dates from the 13th century, when Carmelite friars had been driven from the Holy Land during the Crusades; some sources, however, place refugees from Mount Carmel there as early as the eighth century. Its 75-meter bell tower can be seen from a distance even among taller modern buildings.
In 1268, Conradin was executed in the square beside the church. He was the last Hohenstaufen heir to the Neapolitan throne, and his execution by Charles I of Anjou began the Angevin reign of the kingdom. Conradin's mother was Elisabeth of Bavaria, and the remains of Conradin and his companion Frederick of Baden are in the church. A statue to Conradin, commissioned by Maximilian II of Bavaria while he was crown prince, and designed by the sculptor Thorvaldsen, was finished by his pupil Schopf in 1847.
Nicola Tagliacozzi Canale designed the elaborate Baroque decoration of 1755–56, with stucco work, carved wood and marble in several colors. The bell tower was rebuilt in the 17th century by the architect Giuseppe Nuvolo and has a cupola shaped like an onion and decorated in maiolica. The church was heavily bombed in the Second World War and shows scars of the damage; the old monastic grounds next to it serve as a shelter for people in need.
