About Santa Maria della Sanità, Naples
Santa Maria della Sanità, a basilica church, is in the Rione Sanità of Naples, Italy, built over the Catacombs of San Gaudioso. It stands on a piazza close to the junction of Via Sanità and Via Teresa degli Scalzi. It also goes by the names San Vincenzo and San Vincenzo della Sanità, after an icon of San Vincenzo Ferrer, locally called O' Monacone (the big monk).
The church began as part of a Dominican monastery founded in 1577. It was built from 1602 to 1613 on a centralized Greek-cross plan to designs by Giuseppe Nuvolo. The first church was linked with the cult of San Gaudioso, a bishop who died in Naples around 451. A Madonna and Child image from the 6th century, found at the site in the 1500s, led to the founding of the church.
The main altar is raised and reached by two spiraling Baroque-style staircases on either side, all covered in polychrome marble, and the entrance to the crypt is beneath it. Dionisi Lazzari designed the polychrome marble pulpit, which dates from 1677 to 1705. Painters including Luca Giordano, Andrea Vaccaro and Pacecco de Rosa decorated the upper church and its chapels, and the crypt has ten shallow altars with frescoes by Bernardino Fera.
