About the Slovenian Church of St. Cyril in New York
In Manhattan's East Village stands the Slovenian Church of St. Cyril, a historic religious institution that is also Slovenia's cultural center in the city. It is credited with a key part in Slovenian life over more than a century, independence included. It began with the first Slovenian immigrants to reach New York City in the late 19th century.
In July 1916, Slovenian immigrants bought a property together on St. Marks Place, paying $19,000. They blessed the cornerstone on Memorial Day 1916, and the first mass was held on July 4, 1916, after a parade from the former German church the community had used, the now-demolished St. Nicholas Church. It provided housing for its resident priest, plus a hall for cultural and community events.
Between 1991 and 1997, the church was renovated under Father Krizolog Cimerman, with new roofing, better lighting and a full interior redecoration. In 1991, during Slovenia's independence war, the church served as a Slovenian information center for American media. Presidents, prime ministers and foreign ministers of Slovenia have visited it.
