About St. George Coptic Orthodox Church, Brooklyn

Among Coptic Orthodox churches in North America, St. George in Dyker Heights, Brooklyn, ranks among the oldest. It is one of over 200 such churches in the United States. It began as the city's second Coptic parish, and by 1973 it was incorporated, with only 60 families. The first Coptic parish in the city was in Ridgewood, Queens.

Official establishment dated to 1973, but the first liturgy was held on December 31, 1972, after the congregation bought its building from the American Baptist Church. That building stands on the east corner where 11th Avenue meets 67th Street, in Dyker Heights, and it was expanded several times.

In 1984 a new church named for Saint Mina the Miracle Worker was built, with seating for about 40 people. In 1986 seating at St. George rose from 180 to 250. New Sunday School classes in the traditional Coptic style began in 1996, and the project was completed by 1998, with capacity for 500 people. The church was consecrated by Pope Shenouda on September 6, 1998, a Sunday.
