About St Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin

In Dublin, Ireland, St Patrick's Cathedral, called Ard-Eaglais Naomh Pádraig in Irish, serves as the Church of Ireland's national cathedral. Unusually, it is no bishop's seat: the Archbishop of Dublin sits at nearby Christ Church Cathedral, about 400 meters away. Since 1870 it has been the Church of Ireland's designated national cathedral for all of Ireland, and its chapter draws members from each of the church's 12 dioceses. The cathedral's best-known dean was Jonathan Swift.

It is described as the largest church in Ireland. The basis of the present building dates from 1191 to 1270, although little of the earliest work survives apart from the baptistry. The rebuilding followed the Early English Gothic style and ran at least to a rededication in 1254, and a Lady Chapel followed around 1270. After a fire, the tower and the west nave were rebuilt in the years 1362 to 1370. The tower is called Minot's Tower after Thomas Minot, who was Archbishop of Dublin from 1363 to 1375 and oversaw the rebuilding.

From its earliest years the site has suffered water seepage and floods from branches of the River Poddle that surround it. As late as the 20th century the water table was reported to be within 2.3 m (7.5 ft) of the floor, so there was never a crypt or basement. The English Reformation took effect at St Patrick's from about 1537, and it became an Anglican church, of the Church of Ireland. In 1311 the cathedral became the founding site of the Medieval University of Dublin, whose first Chancellor was William de Rodyard, the cathedral's dean. The university never thrived and was shut down at the Reformation.

Slim tapering spire
The tower carries a tall, narrow spire. Print friendly adapts the thin tip to your print scale; Full detail keeps it. Print slowly with good cooling so the point stays sharp.
