About Dublin

Dublin is both the capital and the largest city of Ireland. It stands where the River Liffey meets Dublin Bay, in the province of Leinster, and the Dublin Mountains, a part of the Wicklow Mountains range, mark its southern edge. The 2022 census counted 592,713 people in the city council area and 1,263,219 in the city with its suburbs. The Gaels settled the area during or before the 7th century, and the Vikings followed. By the 12th century Dublin was the main settlement in Ireland, it grew quickly from the 17th century, and after independence in 1922 became capital of the Irish Free State.

Dublin Castle was founded in 1204 at the command of King John of England and was largely complete by 1230. Originally of typical Norman courtyard design, it had a central square with no keep, tall defensive walls and a circular tower at each corner, and it used the River Poddle as a natural defense. The Spire of Dublin, a conical stainless steel spire of 121.2 meters (398 ft) on O'Connell Street, was completed in 2003 and replaced Nelson's Pillar. Ian Ritchie Architects designed it. The iron Ha'penny Bridge crosses the River Liffey, and the Old Library of Trinity College holds the Book of Kells.
