About St. Paul's Church, Munich
St. Paul's Church is a large Catholic church in Munich's Ludwigsvorstadt-Isarvorstadt quarter, in Bavaria, Germany. It stands north of the Theresienwiese. The Austrian architect Georg von Hauberrisser designed it in the Gothic Revival style, and construction ran from 1892 to 1906.
The exterior is clad mainly in limestone from Ansbach, while Upper Bavarian tuff was used inside and the core of the masonry is brick. The main tower is 97 meters high and took the tower of Frankfurt Cathedral as its model. Two western towers rise 76 meters, and a large rose window sits above the main entrance on the west facade.
The church was heavily damaged by air raids during World War II, especially in December 1944, and large pieces of its equipment were lost, among them the high altar. On December 17, 1960, an aircraft struck the church's 318-foot steeple shortly after taking off from Munich-Riem Airport.
