About the State Historical Museum
The State Historical Museum is a museum of Russian history in Moscow, between Red Square and Manege Square. Its displays begin with relics of prehistoric tribes and run to artworks that members of the Romanov dynasty acquired, and the collection numbers in the millions of objects. The site was earlier occupied by the Principal Medicine Store, which Peter the Great ordered built in the Moscow Baroque style.
Ivan Zabelin, Aleksey Uvarov and other Slavophiles founded the museum in 1872. After a prolonged competition, the project went to Vladimir Osipovich Sherwood. The present building follows his neo-Russian design and went up during the years 1875 to 1881. Its first 11 exhibit halls opened officially in 1883, when the tsar and his wife visited.
Tsar Alexander III became the museum's honorary president in 1894, and the museum was renamed in 1895 to include his name. Viktor Vasnetsov, Ivan Aivazovsky and Henryk Siemiradzki were among the artists who decorated the interiors in the Russian Revival style. In the Soviet period the murals were judged gaudy and were plastered over. Its collection spans ancient times through the early 20th century.
