About State Library Victoria

State Library Victoria serves as the library for the state of Victoria, Australia, and stands in Melbourne. Founded in 1854 and first called the Melbourne Public Library, it is Australia's oldest public library, and it was among the first free libraries anywhere. It has never left its original site in the central business district, where its front faces Swanston Street, and it has grown to fill a whole block, with Little Lonsdale, Russell and La Trobe streets on its other sides. Its collection holds more than five million items, including manuscripts, paintings, maps, photographs and newspapers as well as books, plus Ned Kelly's armor and the original Jerilderie Letter.

In 1853 it was decided to build a library, museum and gallery together, at the instigation of Sir Redmond Barry and Governor Charles La Trobe. Architect Joseph Reed, newly arrived, won the competition. His firm and its successors designed most later extensions and other landmarks, including the Royal Exhibition Building and the Melbourne Town Hall. On July 3, 1854, Governor Sir Charles Hotham laid foundation stones for both the library and the University of Melbourne. The first stage opened on February 11, 1856, in the middle section of the Swanston Street wing, with 3,800 books selected by Mr Justice Barry.

Work on the Domed Reading Room began in 1909, and it opened in 1913. Bates, Peebles and Smart, a firm that succeeded Joseph Reed's, designed it. Copper sheets covered the dome's skylights from 1959 because of leaks, which left the interior dim for decades. In 2003 it reopened under the name La Trobe Reading Room, its skylights uncovered again. Ancher Mortlock & Woolley designed major refurbishments carried out from 1990 to 2004, which cost about A$200 million.

How it prints

Make this print opens the generator on a 600 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.

Landmark height and scale at three print sizes
Print size Landmark height Scale
160 mm default 12 mm 1:3,750
200 mm 15 mm 1:3,000
256 mm 19 mm 1:2,344

A ribbed central dome
The large dome has ribs and small openings. Print friendly adapts them to the print scale; layers of 0.12 to 0.16 mm keep the ribs crisp.
A columned front
The street front has a classical portico with slim columns. A larger print size keeps them; Print friendly adapts thin columns to the print scale.
One piece with the ground
State Library Victoria is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
Pick the detail for your nozzle
In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
Colors
Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. State Library Victoria takes the building color.
File format
You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.

About this model

State Library Victoria is one of more than 2,300 landmark models in Mini Skyline. They are made with AI, and each one is checked from four sides in its real surroundings before release. Everything around it is built from OpenStreetMap and Overture map data. If you would rather print the shape from map data, turn off Landmark models in the Buildings settings.

Common questions

Is there a State Library Victoria STL I can download?

Mini Skyline builds the file for you in your browser and exports 3MF, which every major slicer opens. If you need an STL, open the 3MF in your slicer and export it from there.

How big can I print it?

Any print size from 40 mm across. State Library Victoria grows with the print: about 12 mm tall on the default 160 mm print. For a model larger than your printer bed, Project Mode splits the area into tiles.

Is it free?

Yes. Generation runs in your browser, with no account and nothing behind a paywall.
