Make this print opens the generator on a 600 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.

  1. Domed rotunda

The domed rotunda is the smallest and most detailed part of the model, set between two large blocks. Print friendly adapts it to the print scale; Full detail on a larger print keeps more of the dome.

  2. Window grid on the blocks

The apartment blocks have a dense grid of windows. A layer height of 0.12–0.16 mm keeps the grid crisp.

  3. One piece with the ground

The Octagon, Roosevelt Island is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.

  4. Pick the detail for your nozzle

In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.

  5. Colors

Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. The Octagon, Roosevelt Island takes the building color.

  6. File format

You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.

About The Octagon, Roosevelt Island

Roosevelt Island, part of New York City, is the site of The Octagon, at 888 Main Street. It dates to 1834 and forms a complex with attached apartment buildings. It began as the entrance to a hospital for mental health, called the New York City Lunatic Asylum, opening in 1841. Alexander Jackson Davis designed the five-story rotunda, built of blue-gray stone quarried on the island.

Nothing else of the hospital remains. The Metropolitan Hospital took in the structure in 1894. The hospital closed in 1955, and the building stood abandoned. Decay over many years and two fires had left it close to ruin, but it joined the National Register of Historic Places on March 16, 1972.

After restoration, it reopened in April 2006 as the lobby entrance of two adjoining apartment buildings, which hold 500 units in total. Solar panels and fuel cells serve the apartments: a 50 kW array and a 400 kW fuel cell together supply over half of the building’s power. A residential building modeled on the original structure received LEED Silver status in 2008.
