About the Third County Courthouse, Staten Island
Staten Island's Third County Courthouse dates to 1837 and is a Greek Revival building. It stands at 302 Center Street, which lies in Historic Richmond Town, close to the island's geographic center. Two smaller courthouses came before it. For most of the nineteenth century it served as the Richmond County Courthouse, and it remained in use until 1919, when the new Richmond County Courthouse in St. George replaced it.
The oldest surviving building in New York City constructed mainly as a courthouse, it once had a jail beside it. In 1844 it was the scene of Polly Bodine's trial; she stood accused of two killings and of setting their house on fire. The two people she was accused of killing were her husband's sister and niece. Edgar Allan Poe, as well as P. T. Barnum, commented on the case. The crowded trial ended in a hung jury and an early change of venue: first to Manhattan, where she was convicted before the verdict was overturned; the case then moved to Newburgh, New York, where she was acquitted.
