About Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building No. 1
Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building No. 1 is the tallest of the three structures that make up the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, also called the Tochō. The complex houses the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. Kenzo Tange designed it in Shinjuku ward, and each structure takes up a city block. No. 1 is a 48-story tower that splits into two at the 33rd floor, and three further levels sit underground.
The design is meant to suggest both an integrated circuit and a Gothic cathedral. It is the world's tallest city hall. Each of the two towers has a panoramic observation deck on floor 45, 202 m (663 ft) up; both are free for the public to enter and hold gift shops and cafes.
Construction was finished in December 1990 at a public cost of about ¥157 billion, roughly US$1 billion. The building replaced the old city hall in Yūrakuchō, which dates from 1957 and was also Tange's work; the Tokyo International Forum stands on that old site. Until the Midtown Tower was completed in 2007, it held the title of Tokyo's tallest building by roof height, at 242.9 m (797 ft).
How it prints
Make this print opens the generator on a 600 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.
| Print size | Landmark height | Scale |
|---|---|---|
| 160 mm default | 64 mm | 1:3,750 |
| 200 mm | 81 mm | 1:3,000 |

- Open frames on the tower tops
- Each tower ends in an open square frame. Print friendly adapts thin frames to the print scale; Full detail keeps them as modeled, which suits a larger print. Printing slowly helps tall, slim shapes.
- Slim vertical strips
- Thin strips run up the sides of the towers. A bigger print size keeps more of them, and layers of 0.12 to 0.16 mm keep fine vertical detail crisp.
- One piece with the ground
- Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building No. 1 is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
- Pick the detail for your nozzle
- In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
- Colors
- Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building No. 1 takes the building color.
- File format
- You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.
