About the United States Capitol

The Capitol is where the U.S. Congress meets, in Washington, D.C. It stands on Capitol Hill, at the east end of the National Mall. The district's street-numbering system and its four quadrants both start from the building. Its style is neoclassical and its exterior is white, matching the principal buildings for the executive and the judicial branch. The House of Representatives occupies the south wing, and the Senate the north wing. An official called the architect of the Capitol looks after the building and its grounds.

President Washington laid the cornerstone on September 18, 1793. William Thornton, an amateur architect, submitted a late entry that was approved on April 5, 1793, and he became the Capitol's first architect. The central sections were finished in 1800, and on November 17, 1800, the 6th Congress convened in the building as the national capital moved from Philadelphia to Washington. British forces burned Washington in 1814 and partly destroyed the building, but it was fully restored within five years.

In the 19th century the wings were extended as more states joined the union. Thomas Ustick Walter and August Schoenborn designed the cast-iron dome and the two new wings in the 1850s, and the dome was completed around 1866, soon after the American Civil War. Both the east and west sides are called fronts, but only the east front was meant for visitors and dignitaries. The west front hosts presidential inauguration ceremonies. The Visitor Center opened in the early 21st century.

How it prints

Make this print opens the generator on a 600 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.

Landmark height and scale at three print sizes
Print size Landmark height Scale

200 mm 32 mm 1:3,000
256 mm 40 mm 1:2,344

A dome with a slim finial
The dome carries a ring of columns and ends in a thin finial at the top. Print slowly with good cooling, and layers of 0.12 to 0.16 mm keep the ribs and the tip crisp.
Porticos along a wide front
The two wings and the central front carry rows of small columns. A larger print size keeps more of them, and Full detail suits a fine nozzle; Print friendly adapts them for smaller prints.
One piece with the ground
The United States Capitol is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
Pick the detail for your nozzle
In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
Colors
Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. The United States Capitol takes the building color.
File format
You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.

Common questions

Is there a United States Capitol STL I can download?

Mini Skyline builds the file for you in your browser and exports 3MF, which every major slicer opens. If you need an STL, open the 3MF in your slicer and export it from there.

How big can I print it?

Any print size from 40 mm across. The United States Capitol grows with the print: about 25 mm tall on the default 160 mm print. For a model larger than your printer bed, Project Mode splits the area into tiles.

Is it free?
