About the Volkstheater, Vienna
The Volkstheater, which translates as "People's Theatre," stands in Vienna's seventh district, Neubau. It was founded in 1889 at the request of the city's citizens, among them the dramatist Ludwig Anzengruber and Thonet, the furniture maker. Their aim was to give Vienna a popular counterweight to the Hofburgtheater. Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer drew up the designs, and they tried to reconcile their plans with historicism.
The founders wanted to bring classical and modern literature to wider circles of Viennese, staged next to more traditional plays. The house follows that tradition with new productions of the classics, fresh readings of Ferdinand Raimund and Johann Nestroy, plus many new plays and reruns. It gives special attention to Austrian playwrights, old and new. In 2005 it also opened Volkstheater Hundsturm, an alternative stage for experimental theater, in Vienna's fifth district, Margareten. The Vienna U-Bahn's U2 and U3 lines share a Volkstheater station at the site.
