About Estadio Brigadier General Estanislao López
Estadio Brigadier General Estanislao López, popularly called The Elephant Graveyard, hosts football in Santa Fe, Argentina. It opened in 1946 and belongs to Club Atlético Colón, which plays there. Concrete grandstands enclose the whole pitch, with an upper tier along its northern, eastern and southern sides and boxes at the northwest and southwest corners.
The nickname comes from Colón's wins over notable visiting teams. One of them was the Santos of Pelé, which lost 2-1 in 1964 while holding a record of 43 undefeated matches. Peñarol, beaten there in 1967, was another. The field measures 105 x 70 m, and the stadium holds 30,835 spectators.
It was inaugurated on July 9, 1946, with a friendly against Boca Juniors. In 1952 it was named after Eva Perón, then renamed after Brigadier General Estanislao López, who governed Santa Fe province between 1818 and 1838. The 2011 Copa América used the stadium as a venue, and so did the 2010 World Rugby U-20 Championship.
