About 30 Hudson Yards

A supertall commercial skyscraper, 30 Hudson Yards rises on Midtown Manhattan's West Side in New York City and was known as the North Tower during construction. The neighborhoods of Hell's Kitchen and Chelsea and the Penn Station district are nearby. The tower belongs to the Hudson Yards Redevelopment Project, which reworks the West Side Yard of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. Kohn Pedersen Fox designed it, with Thornton Tomasetti as lead structural engineer. Plans first called for 408 m (1,337 ft), but the height was reduced to 390 m (1,270 ft).

Early construction work began after a groundbreaking ceremony on December 4, 2012. It centered on a platform covering much of the Eastern Rail Yard, which also gives the Gateway Rail Tunnel project an unobstructed route underground. The platform rests on caissons drilled into solid bedrock known as Manhattan schist. The tower opened on March 15, 2019.

The Edge, a triangular observation deck, projects from the 100th floor, and the 101st floor holds a bar and an event space. The deck sits at 1,100 feet and opened in March 2020. Its outdoor terrace is cantilevered 24 m (80 ft) to the south, and a glass floor triangle of 20.9 m² (225 sq ft) looks down 345 m (1,131 ft) to the street. Reviewers have compared the shape of the building to a duck because of the protruding deck. In the lobby, Spanish artist Jaume Plensa hung 11 stainless steel spheres from the ceiling.

How it prints

Make this print opens the generator on a 600 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.

Landmark height and scale at three print sizes

Slanted top and thin deck
A slim deck projects from the slanted top of the tower. Print friendly adapts thin overhangs like this to your print scale; Full detail keeps it, best on a larger print with 0.12 to 0.16 mm layers.
A tall, slim tower
The tower is tall and narrow beside its neighbors. Printing slowly, with good cooling, helps the upper floors and the top hold their shape.
One piece with the ground
30 Hudson Yards is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
Pick the detail for your nozzle
In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
Colors
Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. 30 Hudson Yards takes the building color.
File format
You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.
