About Castel del Monte

The name Castel del Monte means Castle of the Mountain in Italian. The building is a citadel and castle from the 13th century. It sits on a hill in Andria, in southeast Italy's Apulia region, at an altitude of 540 meters (1,770 ft). King Frederick II had it built in the 1240s on lands that came to him from his mother, Constance of Sicily. It has no moat or drawbridge, and some have doubted that it was meant as a defensive fortress, but archaeological work suggests a curtain wall once surrounded it.

Its bold octagonal plan is what the castle is best known for. The main block is an eight-sided prism, with an eight-sided tower standing at each corner, and both floors have eight rooms around an eight-sided courtyard. Its walls rise 25 m (82 ft), and each of the eight corner towers is 26 m (85 ft) high. Across, the castle measures 56 m (184 ft). The ornate main entrance faces east and has a pediment on thin fluted pilasters, classical elements that may reflect Frederick II's interest in Greek and Roman architecture.

A document from 1240 has Frederick II telling the governor of Capitanata to complete certain works at the castle, which was never finished. Later it served as a prison and as a refuge during a plague. In the 18th century, the marble and other furnishings inside were taken away. The Italian State bought it in 1876 for 25,000 lire and began restoration in 1928. UNESCO named it a World Heritage Site in 1996.

How it prints

Make this print opens the generator on a 600 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.

Landmark height and scale at three print sizes
Print size Landmark height Scale

200 mm 10 mm 1:3,000
256 mm 13 mm 1:2,344

Small windows and entrance details
The walls carry small pointed-arch windows, and the east side has an entrance with a pediment and steps. Print friendly adapts these small details to your print scale; Full detail keeps them, best on a larger print.
Open courtyard in the center
The octagonal courtyard is an open well in the middle of the castle. Layers of 0.12 to 0.16 mm keep its inner edges crisp, and a larger print keeps the courtyard readable.
One piece with the ground
Castel del Monte is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
Pick the detail for your nozzle
In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
Colors
Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. Castel del Monte takes the building color.
File format
You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.
