About the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood
The Savior on Spilled Blood, a Russian Orthodox church, stands in Saint Petersburg, Russia, and it counts among the city's major attractions. Work on it ran from 1883 to 1907. The church was built where Narodnaya Volya members assassinated Alexander II in March 1881. The Romanov imperial family paid for it as an honor to him, and "on [Spilled] Blood" in the name alludes to his assassination. It was begun in 1883 under Alexander III, it was consecrated in memory of his father, and it was finished in 1907 under Nicholas II.
The church lies along the Griboedov Canal. The canal was narrowed so that the stretch of road along which the tsar was being driven fell inside the church walls, and a shrine could stand at the precise place of the attack. A ciborium-shaped shrine stands at the church's far end from the altar. It is decorated using topaz, lazurite and further semi-precious stones, which contrast with the plain cobblestones from the old road visible in its floor.
Saint Petersburg is predominantly Baroque and Neoclassical in its architecture, and this church stands apart. It recalls medieval Russian architecture, in a spirit of romantic nationalism, and it intentionally resembles 17th-century Yaroslavl churches and St. Basil's Cathedral in Moscow. Mikhail Vrubel, Viktor Vasnetsov and Mikhail Nesterov were among the celebrated Russian artists who designed the interior, while the chief architect, Alfred Alexandrovich Parland, was comparatively little known. The church contains over 7,065 square meters of mosaics. Restoration lasted 27 years, and the church reopened in August 1997 as a museum of mosaics.
How it prints
Make this print opens the generator on a 600 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.

- Onion domes and slim crosses
- Several onion domes each end in a slim cross. Print friendly adapts small domes and thin crosses to your print scale; Full detail keeps them, best printed slowly with good cooling and 0.12 to 0.16 mm layers.
- Tent roof and pointed gables
- A tall central tent roof rises above a row of pointed gables. Layers of 0.12 to 0.16 mm keep their sharp edges crisp, and a larger print holds more of the surface detail.
- One piece with the ground
- The Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
- Pick the detail for your nozzle
- In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
- Colors
- Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. The Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood takes the building color.
- File format
- You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.
