About the Peter and Paul Fortress

Saint Petersburg's original citadel is the Peter and Paul Fortress, in Russia. Peter the Great founded it in 1703, and Domenico Trezzini's designs were used for the star-shaped fortress built between 1706 and 1740. It stands on small Hare Island, beside the northern bank of the Neva River. A base for the city garrison from about 1720, it also held high-ranking or political prisoners.

The prison use lasted until the early 1920s, and the complex has been a museum since 1924. During the February Revolution of 1917, mutinous soldiers attacked the fortress and the prisoners were freed. It suffered heavy damage when the Luftwaffe bombarded the city during World War II, and it has been restored since the war. Since 1873 a cannon has been fired at noon, and residents once checked their watches by the shot; it was silent only during revolutions and wars.

Several buildings cluster around the Peter and Paul Cathedral, built from 1712 to 1733, with a bell-tower 122.5 m (402 ft) high and a gilded cupola topped by an angel. Other structures inside the walls include the Trubetskoy Bastion with its prison cells, the city museum, and the Saint Petersburg Mint building, built under Emperor Paul I to designs by Antonio Porta. The Kronverk, formerly the fortress's outer defense, lies to the north across the Kronverksky Strait.

How it prints

Make this print opens the generator on a 1300 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.

Landmark height and scale at three print sizes
Print size Landmark height Scale
160 mm default 16 mm 1:8,125
200 mm 20 mm 1:6,500
256 mm 25 mm 1:5,078

Thin cathedral spire
The cathedral's slender spire is the tallest and finest part of the model. Print friendly adapts it to the print scale; Full detail keeps it on larger prints, and printing slowly with cooling helps the tip.
Low star-shaped walls
The star-shaped walls are long, thin and low. A larger print keeps the angled bastions distinct, and 0.12 to 0.16 mm layers keep the wall edges crisp.
One piece with the ground
The Peter and Paul Fortress is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
Pick the detail for your nozzle
In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
Colors
Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. The Peter and Paul Fortress takes the building color.
File format
You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.

About this model

The Peter and Paul Fortress is one of more than 2,300 landmark models in Mini Skyline. They are made with AI, and each one is checked from four sides in its real surroundings before release. Everything around it is built from OpenStreetMap and Overture map data. If you would rather print the shape from map data, turn off Landmark models in the Buildings settings.

Common questions

Is there a Peter and Paul Fortress STL I can download?

Mini Skyline builds the file for you in your browser and exports 3MF, which every major slicer opens. If you need an STL, open the 3MF in your slicer and export it from there.

How big can I print it?

Any print size from 40 mm across. The Peter and Paul Fortress grows with the print: about 16 mm tall on the default 160 mm print. For a model larger than your printer bed, Project Mode splits the area into tiles.

Is it free?

Yes. Generation runs in your browser, with no account and nothing behind a paywall.
