About St Petersburg

Saint Petersburg, formerly Petrograd and later Leningrad, is Russia's second-largest city, behind Moscow. It lies on the Neva River where the Gulf of Finland ends, on the Baltic Sea, and Russia governs it as a federal city. Peter the Great founded it on May 27, 1703, where a captured Swedish fortress had stood. From 1712 to 1918 it was a capital of first the Tsardom of Russia and then the Russian Empire, with a short interval for Moscow between 1728 and 1730. The city was renamed Leningrad in 1924, and in June 1991 voters supported restoring its original name. In 2021 it had 5,601,911 residents.

The historic center is largely made up of Baroque and Neoclassical buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries, and it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site, together with related groups of monuments, since 1991. The oldest surviving building is a wooden house from 1703, built for Peter I near Trinity Square. The Peter and Paul Fortress and its cathedral dominate Zayachy Island, and the Baroque Winter Palace, a former residence of Russian emperors, is part of the Hermitage Museum complex along the Palace Embankment. Losing capital status helped the city keep many pre-revolutionary buildings, because modern prestige projects were usually built in Moscow instead.
