About the Winter Palace
From 1732 to 1917 the Winter Palace, in Saint Petersburg, was the formal home of Russia's emperors, the House of Romanov. Today the Hermitage Museum is housed in the palace and its precincts. It sits between Palace Square and Palace Embankment, beside the site of the original Winter Palace of Peter the Great. The present building is the fourth Winter Palace. It was built and altered almost continuously from the late 1730s until 1837, when a fire severely damaged it and it was rebuilt at once.
Several architects took part in the design. The Italian Bartolomeo Rastrelli (1700–1771) is the most notable, and the style became known as Elizabethan Baroque. In green and white, the palace forms a long rectangle, with a main front that is 30 m (98 ft) high and 215 m (705 ft) in length. The rebuilding after the 1837 fire left the exterior unchanged, but much of the interior was reworked in assorted tastes and styles. One calculation counts 117 staircases, 1,500 rooms, 1,945 windows and 1,886 doors.
In 1905 demonstrators marched toward the Winter Palace in the events known as Bloody Sunday, although by then the Imperial Family preferred the more secure Alexander Palace at Tsarskoe Selo and came back only for formal and state occasions. The Russian Provisional Government briefly took the palace as its seat after the February Revolution of 1917. Later that year Red Guard soldiers and sailors stormed it, an event depicted in Soviet art as a symbol of the October Revolution.
How it prints
Make this print opens the generator on a 600 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.
| Print size | Landmark height | Scale |
|---|---|---|
| 160 mm default | 9 mm | 1:3,750 |
| 200 mm | 12 mm | 1:3,000 |

- Long facade with window rows
- The long street fronts carry many rows of small windows and fine facade detail. Print friendly adapts them to your print scale, and a larger print keeps more of them.
- Narrow courtyards between wings
- The wings wrap around inner courtyards with narrow gaps. A larger print keeps these gaps open, and layers of 0.12 to 0.16 mm keep the roof edges crisp.
- Pick the detail for your nozzle
- In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
- Colors
- Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. The Winter Palace takes the building color.
- File format
- You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.
About this model
The Winter Palace is one of more than 2,300 landmark models in Mini Skyline. They are made with AI, and each one is checked from four sides in its real surroundings before release. Everything around it is built from OpenStreetMap and Overture map data. If you would rather print the shape from map data, turn off Landmark models in the Buildings settings.
Common questions
Is there a Winter Palace STL I can download?
Mini Skyline builds the file for you in your browser and exports 3MF, which every major slicer opens. If you need an STL, open the 3MF in your slicer and export it from there.
How big can I print it?
Any print size from 40 mm across. The Winter Palace grows with the print: about 9 mm tall on the default 160 mm print. For a model larger than your printer bed, Project Mode splits the area into tiles.
Is it free?
Yes. Generation runs in your browser, with no account and nothing behind a paywall.
