About Kathmandu
Kathmandu is the capital of Nepal and its largest city, set within the Kathmandu Valley in the middle of the country. Government, finance, industry and culture in Nepal are centered here. The 2021 census counted 845,767 residents in 105,649 households, and the surrounding metropolitan area has roughly 4 million people. The city's elevation is 1,324 meters (4,344 ft). It was called Kantipur from antiquity into the medieval period, and it counts among the world's oldest continuously inhabited places. The valley, once called the Nepal Mandala, served as the cultural and political center of the Newar people.
An age-old route for trade between India and Tibet crossed Kathmandu, letting the architectural and artistic traditions of other cultures merge with local art and architecture. Hindu and Buddhist religious practices have influenced the city's monuments over the centuries. The valley's heritage monuments and buildings fall into seven groups, which UNESCO inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 1979, with a minor modification in 2006. The groups include Durbar squares at Bhaktapur, Patan and Hanuman Dhoka, Hindu temples at Changunarayan and Pashupatinath, and Buddhist stupas at Boudhanath and Swayambhunath.
