About New Delhi
New Delhi is India's capital city, located within the National Capital Territory of Delhi. The national government's three branches are all based there, and its institutions include the Presidential Palace, Parliament House and the Supreme Court. Within the territory it is a municipality run by the New Delhi Municipal Council, whose area is mostly Lutyens' Delhi plus a few adjacent areas. In everyday speech Delhi and New Delhi are sometimes used for the same thing, but they are distinct, and the municipality forms a relatively small part of the megacity of Delhi. A wider National Capital Region is larger still.
George V laid New Delhi's foundation stone during the Delhi Durbar of 1911, and Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker, both British architects, planned large parts of the city. Building it took about 20 years from 1911, and the capital was inaugurated in 1931. The plan is structured around two central promenades: one stretches from Rashtrapati Bhavan, which sits atop Raisina Hill, to India Gate, and the other cuts across it at right angles. The town plan and architecture were meant as a symbol of British power, with Hindu and Islamic influences fitted into a British Classical and Palladian tradition.
