About Delhi

Delhi, officially the National Capital Territory of Delhi, is both a megacity and a union territory in India, and it contains New Delhi, the national capital. The city straddles the Yamuna river, and it borders the state of Uttar Pradesh to the east and Haryana on its other sides. Delhi became a union territory on November 1, 1956, and the National Capital Territory in 1995. The 2011 census recorded over 11 million people in the city proper and about 16.8 million in the territory. Its urban agglomeration, which includes satellite cities such as Ghaziabad and Gurgaon, is the largest metropolitan area in India.

Seven cities have traditionally been linked with the Delhi region, and forts and townships built by Turkic, Indian and Afghan dynasties are part of them. The Mughal Empire and the Delhi Sultanate, two major empires, both made Delhi their capital between the early 13th and mid-19th centuries, and the city's three UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Humayun's Tomb, the Red Fort and the Qutub Minar, belong to this period. The Qutb Minar, 72.5 m (238 ft) tall, was completed in the 13th century, and its style is closest to Ghaznavid and Ghurid minarets from Central Asia. In 1911, New Delhi was made the capital of the British Raj.
