About Minsk

Minsk is Belarus's capital and its largest city, lying on the Svislach and the subterranean Nyamiha rivers. It holds a special administrative status and is the administrative center of Minsk region and Minsk district, and it numbers among the administrative capitals of both the Commonwealth of Independent States and the Eurasian Economic Union. First mentioned in 1067, it was the seat of the Principality of Minsk before Lithuania's Grand Duchy absorbed it in 1242. Town privileges followed in 1499, and the Russian Empire annexed the city in 1793; from 1919 to 1991 it held capital status in the Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic.

War and trade shaped the city's fabric. Tsar Alexis's troops took Minsk in 1655, and when the Polish-Russian War ended only about 2,000 residents and 300 houses remained. Growth returned under Russian rule: streets and squares were cobbled and paved in the 1830s, a construction boom raised two- and three-story houses of brick and stone in Upper Town, and the Moscow-Warsaw road and a railway between Moscow and Warsaw boosted the city's growth. Minsk became a rail junction and manufacturing hub, gaining a municipal water supply in 1872, a horse tram in 1892 and its first power generator in 1894.
