About Riga

Riga is Latvia's capital and its largest city, and the second most populous in the Baltics. With 588,911 inhabitants in 2026, it holds a third of the country's total population. The city sits where the Daugava river reaches the Gulf of Riga and the Baltic Sea, on a flat, sandy plain between 1 and 10 m (3–33 ft) above the sea. Records from as early as the 2nd century mention a sheltered natural harbor on the site where Riga stands, under the name Duna Urbs. Bishop Albert moved the seat of the Livonian bishopric to Riga in 1201, and in 1282 it joined the Hanseatic League.

Riga's historical center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is known for Art Nouveau buildings and 19th-century wooden architecture. It also has a medieval old town and Gothic revival buildings, for example the Kalpaka Boulevard Library. Bishop Albert laid the Dom's cornerstone in 1211 and consecrated the Dom Cathedral in 1226, and in 1207 he began to fortify the town. The radio and TV tower reaches 368.5 m (1,209 ft), making it the tallest structure anywhere in the Baltic States. In 2014 Riga shared the title of European Capital of Culture with Umeå in Sweden.

How tall do the Riga landmarks print?
