About Kyiv

Kyiv, also spelled Kiev, is Ukraine's capital and most populous city. It sits on both sides of the Dnieper River, in the country's north-central part, and its population was 2,952,301 in January 2022, seventh-most in Europe. It likely served as a commercial center as far back as the 5th century, as a Slavic settlement on the trade route between Scandinavia and Constantinople. After the Varangians (Vikings) captured it in the mid-9th century, it became one of the capitals of Kievan Rus', the earliest East Slavic state. The Siege of Kiev in 1240 left it in ruins. It became capital of the Ukrainian SSR in 1934.

Kyiv mixes old and new: it preserved about 70 percent of the more than 1,000 buildings constructed between 1907 and 1914. After the Ukrainian SSR moved its capital from Kharkiv to Kyiv, new buildings were commissioned in large numbers so the city would look like a capital. Plans for massive monuments of Lenin and Stalin were abandoned for lack of money and because of the hilly landscape. UNESCO recognizes the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra and St. Sophia Cathedral, two of the city's most famous historical complexes, as a World Heritage Site. The Mariinskyi Palace was built from 1745 to 1752 and reconstructed in 1870.
