About Kaunas
Kaunas is Lithuania's second-largest city after Vilnius, and the fourth-largest in the Baltic states. It stands where the country's two largest rivers, the Nemunas and the Neris, meet, near the Kaunas Reservoir, Lithuania's largest body of water. Under the Russian Empire, Kaunas Governorate had it as capital between 1843 and 1915. While Vilnius was part of Poland, Kaunas served as Lithuania's temporary capital. Kaunas was one of the European Capitals of Culture for 2022, and the Roman Catholic archdiocese of Kaunas has its seat there.
Kaunas has a mixed city plan. Its rectangular old town sits where the Nemunas and the Neris meet, and its Gothic-period buildings include Kaunas Castle (13th–16th centuries) and the Old Kaunas Ducal Palace (15th century). The Pažaislis Church and Monastery, whose construction began in 1667, ranks among the best-known Baroque monuments. As Lithuania's temporary capital, the city was heavily modernized, and thousands of new buildings went up. Its interwar buildings are considered some of Europe's finest Art Deco examples, and UNESCO added Kaunas modernist architecture to the World Heritage List in 2023.
