About Montevideo

Montevideo, Uruguay's capital and largest city, sits on the northeastern shore of the Río de la Plata along the country's southern coast. The 2023 census counted 1,287,452 people in the city proper, about 36.8% of the national total, in 201 square kilometers (78 sq mi). A Portuguese garrison was set up on the site in November 1723 and expelled in February 1724 by the Spanish soldier Bruno Mauricio de Zabala, whose diary gives December 24, 1726 as the foundation date. Full independence from Buenos Aires came on January 1, 1730. Every match of the 1930 FIFA World Cup, the first, was played in the city.

The Montevideo Metropolitan Cathedral represents the Neoclassical end of the city's architecture, while the World Trade Center Montevideo and the ANTEL Telecommunication Tower, 158 meters (518 ft) high, are late-modern. The tower and the Palacio Salvo dominate the Bay of Montevideo's skyline. In the Old Town, facade styles echo old European architecture, reflecting heavy immigration from Europe, and 18 de Julio Avenue stands out for its Art Deco architecture. Government buildings of note are the Legislative Palace, Estévez Palace, City Hall and the Executive Tower. The Estadio Centenario, in Parque Batlle, is the most notable sports stadium.
