About Curitiba
Curitiba is the capital and largest city of Paraná, in Southern Brazil. It sits on a plateau at an elevation of 932 m (3,058 ft), lies west of Paranaguá and its seaport, and air traffic arrives through Afonso Pena International and Bacacheri. Curitiba counts as a cultural, political and economic hub for Latin America, is home to the Federal University of Paraná, founded in 1912, and its economy rests on industry and services, the seventh largest in Brazil.
Its shape owes much to planning. In the 1940s and 1950s the planner Alfred Agache drew a first city plan built around a star of boulevards, with downtown amenities, an industrial district and sanitation, but it cost too much to complete. In 1964 Mayor Ivo Arzua asked for fresh proposals, and a team led by the architect Jaime Lerner, later mayor, urged curbs on sprawl, less downtown traffic, protection for the Historic Sector and affordable transit. That document became known as the Curitiba Master Plan, adopted in 1968, and under it Lerner closed XV de Novembro Street to vehicles, while the Trinary Road System gave express buses their own lane between paired one-way streets.
