About São Paulo

São Paulo is the capital of the state of São Paulo and the largest city in Brazil, and it has more people than any other city in the Americas. The name honors Paul the Apostle. Jesuit priests founded it in 1554, which makes it one of the oldest cities in the Americas to have been inhabited without a break. The Brazilian coffee cycle of the mid-19th century consolidated its wealth, and industrialization in the 20th century made it the main national economic hub. Its Arab, Italian and Japanese diasporas are the largest in the world, with ethnic enclaves such as Bixiga, Bom Retiro and Liberdade.

Compared with global cities such as New York City and Hong Kong, São Paulo counts as a low-rise city: even its tallest buildings seldom top forty stories, and a typical residential building has twenty, yet it ranks fourth in the world by quantity of buildings. Until the mid-1950s, planning followed a "demolish and rebuild" idea, as in Prestes Maia's Plan of the Avenues of the 1920s, which sought to link the center with the outskirts by large avenues. In general, the city formed during the 20th century, expanding from a village into a metropolis by informal processes and irregular sprawl.
