About Porto Alegre
Porto Alegre, the capital and largest city of Rio Grande do Sul, is the southernmost state capital in Brazil. It stands on the Guaíba Lake's eastern bank, at the point where five rivers join to create the Lagoa dos Patos, a freshwater lagoon large ships can navigate. That junction made the city an alluvial port and also a chief industrial and commercial center of Brazil. Manuel Jorge Gomes de Sepúlveda founded it in 1769, hiding his identity under the name José Marcelino de Figueiredo; the official date, though, is 1772.
The city's architecture mixes styles, most visibly in the historic center, where eighteenth-century buildings stand among later ones. It began with the Portuguese colonial style and passed through neoclassical, eclectic and modernist phases as the city expanded, built upward and merged with neighboring cities. Growth was vast but poorly controlled, and urban plans followed political and economic swings rather than any long-term plan. Renewal under postmodern and globalized influences has drawn criticism for destroying historical architecture, and projects such as the reworking of the Mauá Pier have stirred controversy.
