About the Rock of Cashel

The Rock of Cashel rises dramatically over a plain at Cashel, in County Tipperary, Ireland. It is a historical site, known as St. Patrick's Rock and as Cashel of the Kings. Local legend holds that St. Patrick drove Satan out of a cave on the mountain called the Devil's Bit, about 20 miles (30 km) to the north, and that the Rock landed at Cashel as a result. By tradition Cashel was the seat of the kings of Munster from as early as the 4th century. Brian Boru was crowned king there in 977.

Its Celtic art and medieval architecture form a collection described as one of the most remarkable anywhere in Europe. Little remains of the earliest structures, and most buildings on the site belong to the 12th and 13th centuries. Oldest and tallest of all is the round tower, which is well preserved: it stands 28 meters (92 ft) high and dates from c.1100. Work on Cormac's Chapel began in 1127, and it was consecrated in 1134. It also has the only Romanesque frescoes in Ireland that survive.

Built between 1235 and 1270, the cathedral has a cruciform plan without aisles, a central tower, and a massive residential tower house at its west end. Arthur Price, who served as the Anglican Archbishop of Cashel, destroyed its main roof at some point in or after the mid-1730s, a decision that has been criticized. The whole plateau is walled, and the graveyard in the grounds includes a number of high crosses.

How it prints

Make this print opens the generator on a 600 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.

Landmark height and scale at three print sizes
Print size Landmark height Scale
160 mm default 9 mm 1:3,750
200 mm 11 mm 1:3,000
256 mm 14 mm 1:2,344

Slender round tower
The round tower is tall and narrow, with a conical cap. Printing slowly and letting layers cool helps it, and layers of 0.12 to 0.16 mm keep the cap crisp.
Thin walls and battlements
The roofless walls are thin and pierced by tall pointed windows, and the central tower has small battlements. A larger print size keeps more of this, and Print friendly adapts the thinnest parts.
One piece with the ground
The Rock of Cashel is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
Pick the detail for your nozzle
In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
Colors
Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. The Rock of Cashel takes the building color.
File format
You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.

About this model

The Rock of Cashel is one of more than 2,300 landmark models in Mini Skyline. They are made with AI, and each one is checked from four sides in its real surroundings before release. Everything around it is built from OpenStreetMap and Overture map data. If you would rather print the shape from map data, turn off Landmark models in the Buildings settings.

Common questions

Is there a Rock of Cashel STL I can download?

Mini Skyline builds the file for you in your browser and exports 3MF, which every major slicer opens. If you need an STL, open the 3MF in your slicer and export it from there.

How big can I print it?

Any print size from 40 mm across. The Rock of Cashel grows with the print: about 9 mm tall on the default 160 mm print. For a model larger than your printer bed, Project Mode splits the area into tiles.

Is it free?

Yes. Generation runs in your browser, with no account and nothing behind a paywall.
