About the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque

The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is a Friday mosque in Muscat, the capital of Oman. It was finished in 2001, is built in a contemporary Islamic style, and is the largest mosque in Oman, with room for 20,000 worshipers. In 1992 Qaboos bin Said Al Said, then the Sultan of Oman, ordered that the country should have a Grand Mosque, and a design competition took place in 1993. The Sultan inaugurated it on May 4, 2001, to mark 30 years of his reign.

The building contract went to Carillion Alawi LLC. Work began in December 1994, after a site at Bausher was chosen, and construction took six years and seven months. The mosque is made of different types of stone, with doors, windows and embellishments of wood and glass, and about 270,000 tonnes of Indian sandstone was imported for it. Five minarets stand around the premises: the main minaret is 90 meters (300 feet) tall, and each of the four flanking minarets is 45.5 meters (149 feet) tall.

Inside, the square main prayer hall has a central dome 50 meters (160 feet) above the floor, and the dome is a major attraction for tourists. The main musalla holds over 6,500 worshipers, the women's musalla 750, and the outer sahn 8,000. The prayer carpet has 1.7 million knots and weighs 21 tonnes, and it took four years and over 600 workers to produce. The mosque also has a chandelier 14 meters (46 feet) high, made by the Italian company Faustig.

How it prints

Ribbed dome and small domes
The central dome is ribbed, and small domes sit on the lower wing. Print friendly adapts these fine ribs to the print scale; Full detail keeps them, which suits a larger print or a fine nozzle.
Rows of small arches
Rows of small arches line the facades. A bigger print size keeps more detail, and layers of 0.12 to 0.16 mm help the arches stay crisp.
One piece with the ground
The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
Pick the detail for your nozzle
In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
Colors
Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque takes the building color.
File format
You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.
