About Muscat

Muscat is Oman's capital and most populous city, and the seat of Muscat Governorate, whose population was 1.72 million in 2022. The city sits on the Gulf of Oman, close to the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, with the Hajar Mountains dominating the view. Its port district of Muttrah lies at the northeastern edge. A leading port already in the early 1st century CE, Muscat was ruled in turn by local tribes and by outside powers like the Persians, the Portuguese and the Ottomans. In the 18th century it was a regional military power. After Qaboos bin Said became Sultan in 1970, Muscat saw rapid infrastructural development.

Muscat's architecture typically features low-lying white buildings. The Portuguese held the city for over a century after 1507, when the admiral Afonso de Albuquerque conquered it and most of the city burned. The Portuguese left the Al Jalali and Al-Mirani forts, their most prominent buildings, and in 1648 the Imam's army demolished the high Portuguese towers. The Bait Al Falaj Fort was important to the city's military history. Among its many mosques is the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, and the city has an opera house that opened on October 14, 2011.
