About Bangkok

Bangkok is Thailand's largest city and its capital, spread over 1,568.7 square kilometers (605.7 sq mi) across the Chao Phraya River delta of the country's center. An estimated 9.1 million people lived there in 2024, about 15.9% of Thailand's people. It grew from a small trading post of the 15th-century Ayutthaya era, and two capitals were founded there: Thonburi (1767) and Rattanakosin (1782). In 1972 the city was made a special administrative area run by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, and it grew rapidly from the 1960s through the 1980s.

Planning policy began with the Litchfield Plan of 1960, yet zoning rules were only fully applied in 1992, so the city grew organically, along newly built roads and upward in commercial areas. The historic center is Rattanakosin Island, home to the Grand Palace, the City Pillar Shrine and important Buddhist temples. The Dusit Palace buildings, among them the neoclassical Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall, reflect heavy European influence. Skyscrapers crowd the business district along Si Lom Road and Sathon Road, unlike the low-rise historic areas, while most streets are fronted by vernacular shophouses.
