About Macau
Macau, also written Macao, is a special administrative region belonging to China. Its territory covers the Macau Peninsula, the two islands of Taipa and Coloane, reclaimed land at Cotai between them, and a few small islets. Zhuhai lies to its north and west, and it sits west of Hong Kong, across the Pearl River estuary. With 32.9 square kilometers of land, no region in the world is more densely populated. The Ming dynasty first leased the territory to Portugal as a trading post in 1557, and Portugal gained perpetual colonial rights in 1887. Portuguese rule lasted until the 1999 handover to China.
Downtown Macau's buildings mix Portuguese, French, English and Italian styles with Chinese ones, and UNESCO named the area a World Heritage Site in 2005. Though the Portuguese were at first barred from fortifying the territory, the Fortaleza do Monte went up in answer to repeated Dutch naval incursions. In 1622 the Portuguese successfully repelled the Dutch attempt to take the city, in the Battle of Macau. Land reclaimed from the sea underlies two-thirds of the region's area. The Roman Catholic diocese of Macau dates from 1576.
