About Ho Chi Minh City

Ho Chi Minh City, formerly Saigon, is the most populous city in Vietnam, with more than 14 million people in 2025, and it is centrally governed. Rivers and canals define its geography, and the largest is the Saigon River. It is Vietnam's biggest financial center, accounts for roughly a quarter of national GDP, and is the country's busiest international transport hub, with Tân Sơn Nhất International Airport handling nearly half of all international arrivals. It served as the capital of French Cochinchina between 1862 and 1949 and later of South Vietnam, and after unification in 1976 it was renamed for Ho Chi Minh.

The city holds buildings from many styles and periods. French colonial influence appears throughout the city, especially in the center, where French colonial buildings include Bến Thành Market, City Hall, the Saigon Central Post Office, and Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica of Saigon. Chinese-inspired buildings are mostly in Chợ Lớn, the Chinatown quarter, among them the Thien Hau Temple, first built around 1760. Vietnamese modernist architecture began to develop under the Republic of Vietnam, and the Independence Palace was commissioned then, replacing a Baroque Revival palace.
