About Guadalajara
Guadalajara is the capital of Jalisco, in western Mexico, and the state's most populous city. The 2020 census counted 1,385,629 residents, making it Mexico's 8th most populous city, and its metropolitan area, with 5,268,642 residents, is the country's third largest. Cristóbal de Oñate founded a settlement in the region in early 1532. On November 8, 1539, Charles V gave the town the title of city together with a coat of arms, and made it capital of the kingdom called Nueva Galicia. The settlement moved and changed names several times before reaching its site in the Atemajac Valley in 1542.
Downtown is the oldest part of Guadalajara and the place where the city was founded. Work on the Metropolitan Cathedral began in 1558, and it was consecrated in 1616. Its towers date from the 19th century and replaced originals destroyed by an earthquake. The Degollado Theater, a Neoclassical design, dates from the middle of the 19th century. Manuel Tolsá began building the Former Hospice Cabañas in 1805, and UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site in 1997. French style influenced the city during the Porfiriato, and Italian architects shaped its Gothic structures. The city's styles run from Baroque and Viceregal to Eclectic, Art Deco and Neo-Gothic.
