About El Paso
El Paso is the seat of El Paso County, Texas, and the largest city in West Texas by population, with 678,815 residents at the 2020 census. It stands on the Rio Grande, facing Ciudad Juárez, the state of Chihuahua's most populous city, across the international border. Together with Las Cruces, New Mexico, these cities form a binational region known as Paso del Norte or the Borderplex, home to 2.7 million people. UTEP (University of Texas at El Paso) is the city's primary university, and Fort Bliss, Biggs Army Airfield and William Beaumont Army Medical Center are in the area. About 81% of residents are Hispanic.
In 1849 a military post opposite El Paso del Norte was set up on Coons' Rancho, next to the settlement of Franklin, which grew into the core of what would become El Paso, Texas. In 1859 the El Paso company bought the property and hired Anson Mills to survey the site and plan the town, producing the street layout of downtown El Paso. The Wells Fargo Plaza, constructed in the early 1970s under the name State National Plaza, is the city's second-tallest building, a black-windowed tower of 92 m (302 ft) known for its 13 white horizontal lights.
