About Tombstone
Tombstone, in Cochise County, Arizona, was founded in 1879 by the prospector Ed Schieffelin, when the area was part of Pima County, Arizona Territory. Many boomtowns appeared across the southwestern United States then, and Tombstone was among them. Its silver mining district was the most productive in Arizona and yielded silver bullion worth roughly $40 to $85 million. The city is best known for the O.K. Corral gunfight, and tourism supplies most of its revenue. At the 2020 census it had 1,308 permanent residents.
Tombstone was kept from turning into a ghost town in part because it stayed the Cochise County seat until 1929. The Cochise County Courthouse and the gallows yard beside it are preserved as a museum. The tourist district centers on East Allen Street, where shaded boardwalks stretch for three blocks past gift shops, saloons and eateries. Cars are barred from the street's historic district between 3rd Street, by the city park and the OK Corral, and 6th Street, by the Bird Cage Theatre. Boothill Cemetery sits out on Highway 80.
