About Le Mans

Le Mans lies in northwestern France, in the Pays de la Loire region, at the meeting of the Sarthe and Huisne rivers. It was the traditional capital of the province of Maine, is the departmental capital of Sarthe, and is the seat of a Roman Catholic diocese. The city proper had 145,182 inhabitants in 2022, within a metropolitan area of 370,280. Its people are called Manceaux (men) and Mancelles (women). The 24 Hours of Le Mans, an endurance race for sports cars, has been held in the city since 1923, and Le Mans is best known for motorsports.

The Cité Plantagenêt, also called Vieux Mans, is the city's well-preserved old town, and the Cathédrale St-Julien is another of its main sights. A 3rd-century amphitheater remains visible, and workers were mobilized in the third-century crisis to build defensive walls. The ancient wall around the city is among the most complete surviving circuits of Gallo-Roman city walls. Notre-Dame de la Couture is a medieval church, and Notre Dame de Sainte Croix is neogothic. In the 19th century, industrialization saw railways, motor vehicle production, textiles and tobacco manufacture develop. The 24 Hours circuit first ran along public roads south of the city, toward Mulsanne.
