About Saint-Denis
Saint-Denis is a northern suburb of Paris, France, and a commune in Seine-Saint-Denis, 9.4 kilometers from the center of Paris. To its south it meets the 18th arrondissement of Paris, and it has more residents than any other Paris suburb. It is a subprefecture and the seat of its own arrondissement, and it belongs to the Métropole du Grand Paris. Nearly all French kings, from Dagobert I on, were buried in its basilica. In the 19th century the commune became increasingly industrialized: the Canal Saint-Denis was built in 1824, and the first railway arrived in 1843.
A Gallo-Roman village named Catolacus stood here in the 2nd century, and Saint Denis, Paris's first bishop, was buried in its cemetery. Sainte Geneviève arranged for a small chapel over his tomb around 475 AD, which Dagobert I later had rebuilt as the Abbey of Saint Denis. In 1140, Abbot Suger began enlarging the Basilica of Saint Denis, often named as the earliest example of the early Gothic style. It was consecrated in 1144. The commune also gained the Stade de France, the main stadium of the 1998 FIFA World Cup.
