About Brighton
Brighton is a seaside resort in East Sussex, England, part of the city of Brighton and Hove, 47 miles (76 km) from London. Settlement in the area goes back as far as the Bronze Age, and continues through Roman and Anglo-Saxon times; the ancient settlement of Brighthelmstone appears in the Domesday Book of 1086. The Old Town's growth brought the town importance in medieval times, then it lost ground in the early modern period. It drew more visitors once road travel to London improved and it became a boarding point for boats to France, and sea bathing made it popular as a health resort.
In the Georgian era Brighton became a highly fashionable resort encouraged by the Prince Regent, who later reigned as King George IV and built the Royal Pavilion under the direction of John Nash, its Indo-Saracenic architecture matched by an Oriental interior. The railways arrived in 1841 and brought day-trippers from London. Many attractions date from the Victorian years, including the Grand Hotel and the Palace Pier, which opened in 1899. The West Pier, built in 1866, is one of the country's two Grade I listed piers and has been closed since 1975.
