About Marseille

Marseille lies in Provence on the Mediterranean coast of southern France and is the prefecture of both the Bouches-du-Rhône department and Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. Only Paris has more people within its city limits: Marseille had 886,040 inhabitants in 2023, in a municipal territory of 241 km² (93 sq mi). The southeast of the city lies in Calanques National Park, which makes it the only large French city with a national park inside its limits. Greek settlers founded it around 600 BC, and the ancient Greeks called it Massalia and the Romans Massilia. It has traded as a port since antiquity.

The Old Port sits at the center of the city, and the Canebière, a wide main boulevard, runs east from the port to the Réformés quarter. Fort Saint-Nicolas and Fort Saint-Jean flank the port's entrance, and the Romano-Byzantine church of Notre-Dame de la Garde, nicknamed "la Bonne Mère," overlooks the port as a symbol of the city. The Euroméditerranée project, aimed at economic development and urban renewal, began in the 1990s. Later work added the tramway and the CMA CGM Tower, converted the Hôtel-Dieu to a luxury hotel, enlarged the Stade Vélodrome and brought the MuCEM museum.
