About Tashkent
Tashkent is Uzbekistan's capital and largest city, and Central Asia's most populous city. It lies in the northeast of the country, on the Silk Road network of trade routes that joined the Eastern and Western worlds. Genghis Khan razed Tashkent in 1219, and it was later rebuilt; in 1865 it fell to the Russian Empire and became the capital of Russian Turkestan. An earthquake destroyed much of the city in 1966, and it was rebuilt in Soviet style, at a time when it ranked fourth-largest in the Soviet Union.
Most of the ancient city was lost to the revolution of 1917 and to the earthquake of 1966, yet older monuments survive. The Kukeldash Madrasah dates from the reign of Abdullah Khan II, and the Qaffol Shoshi mausoleum, an asymmetrical domed portal tomb, was built in its current form in 1542 by the royal architect Gulyam Husayn. The opera and ballet theater was designed by Aleksey Shchusev, architect of Lenin's Tomb, with the labor of Japanese prisoners of war. Soviet work left the metro, known for its elaborate station interiors, and the Amir Timur Museum under a blue dome; a master plan runs through 2045.
