About Tehran
Tehran is Iran's capital and largest city, as well as the capital of Tehran province. The city has around 9 million residents and its metropolitan area 16.8 million, and no other city in Iran or West Asia is more populous. In classical antiquity Rhages, a prominent Iranian city, covered part of the area. The Qajar ruler Agha Mohammad Khan first chose Tehran as the capital in 1786, for its closeness to Iran's Caucasus territories and to steer clear of the vying factions of earlier ruling dynasties. Large-scale construction began in the 1920s, and Tehran drew mass migrations from all over Iran.
Because of seismic activity, Tehran was once low-rise, but high-rise developments have since been built for its growing population. Despite regular earthquakes, some historic buildings remain from the Qajar period, and royal complexes such as Golestan, Saadabad and Niavaran were built under the last two monarchies. The Azadi Tower, a memorial from 1971 commemorating 2,500 years of the Persian Empire, blends Achaemenid and Sassanid elements with Iranian architecture of the post-classical period. The Milad Tower, completed in 2007, is a second famous tower of the city, and the Tabiat Bridge of 2014 is Tehran's largest pedestrian overpass.
